35th ANNIVERSARY

VE3JW

1974 – 2009

February 19, 2009 marks the 35th anniversary of the Amateur Radio Exhibit station VE3JW located at the Canada Science and Technology Museum

OVMRC will mark this special date with a day long celebration starting with the opening of the VE3JW station at 9am. All radio amateurs, regardless of club affiliation, are invited to come to the station and log at least one contact in whatever band and mode you are most familiar with.

This activity will carry on until around 4:30pm when we will break to join our special guests for dinner at the Perkins Family Restaurant on Saint-Laurent Boulevard at 5pm.

The private area at Perkins can accommodate 44 people.

At this time we count 15 reservations. If you would like to come to the dinner, please inform me before Feb 16.

At 7:30pm we will all gather in the conference area of the Sci&Tech Museum for the monthly OVMRC meeting at which time an anniversary cake will be shared by all.

A presentation of VE3JW memorabilia from the private collection of Mr Ed Morgan, VE3GX, will be displayed.

Ed will talk about the early days of the station and the amateurs involved at that time. A display of some important events marking the 35 years of VE3JW will also be shown.

So, mark this date now and come and join us in this special celebration on Thursday, February 19, 2009.

On 24 Jan 2007, students from l'Ecole Elémentaire Publique Le Prélude from nearby Orléans were at the Museum's auditorium for a contact with Sunita Williams aboard the ISS. It was a complete success. Read all about it in "The Canadian Amateur".

Here is a picture of the celebration cake with Museum Logo and OVMRC crest. In the second picture is Cleary Cotter, great-grandson of Jimmy Cotter cutting the celebration cake. We also have to mention here the link to grandaughter Jayne who pressed the key to create the spark marking the opening of the VE3JW station in 1974.

CARLETON STUDENTS RETURN TO VE3JW

On May 10 2007, we were hosting, for the second time, students from the Computer Science Course at Carleton. Led by their professor, Michel Barbeau, VE2BPM, this new group was introduced to VE3JW, presented with the history of the station, its purpose, and its make up.

We then proceeded to make contacts in whatever mode was available at the time. Propagation was not good, so we had limited success on HF. The two-hour time span that the students spent with us did not present any opportunity for satellite contacts.

However, Larry, VE3WEH, who was assisting yours truly, (and taking photos) had good contacts via IRLP. A gentleman in Indianapolis entertained the students for a while talking about the special event station W9IMS (International Motor Speedway) which is at the Speedway. After the usual group photo, the students went on for lunch and to think about Amateur Radio. Till next year!
